Essential viewpoints

Six points for understanding the district's geography: where land ends and sea begins.

The six

Herbeira (Cariño): the highest cliff, dropping sheer into the Atlantic.

Loiba (Ortigueira): cliffs, small beaches and the coast's most photographed bench.

Estaca de Bares (Mañón): the peninsula's northernmost point, with a lighthouse and bird migration.

Chanteiro (Ares): the mouth of the estuary, with San Felipe opposite.

San Felipe castle (Ferrol): fortress and views over the entrance to the ria.

Andrade tower (Pontedeume): the estuary, the bridge and the Eume valley from the town centre.

Getting there

All are reachable by car, though the last stretch may be a track. Herbeira and Loiba are exposed to wind.

For sunset, leave with daylight and bring warm layers. Fog can cover the coast in any month.

Care

Keep back from cliff edges: the ground can give way. Watch children and do not cross livestock fences.

On stormy days, avoid exposed viewpoints. Wind can knock you off balance.
